How money works in Classic World: NPC prices against player prices, what holds value, where mesos go, which citizenship town suits your stat, and the rules that can cost you an account.
Every number and name on this page is read live from the game data.
Classic World has two price worlds. NPC prices are fixed and small. Player prices move fast and are often many times higher. Almost every money mistake comes from mixing the two up: selling a scroll to an NPC, or quoting a price from Founder's Access.
Before you sell, spend or plan around a price, ask which world it belongs to. Then check market prices for the player side.
Three currencies
- Mesos are what players pay each other. You earn them from monsters, quests and sales.
- NX is bought with real money. It is the only balance shared with main MapleStory.
- Leaf Points are a Classic World Cash currency from event coupons.
NX and Leaf Points never turn into stats directly. NX reaches mesos in one way: a player buys a tradable Cash item and sells it to another player. Tradable Cash items sold for mesos in the week to 7 Nov, so a free player can buy them that way. Store listings show only asking prices, so ask in chat what one recently sold for. Details are in the Cash Shop guide.
What holds value
These items pay little or nothing at an NPC. Players pay far more. We do not print market figures here because they age within days, so each row links to its board, where players post what they paid. As of 7 Nov it has no reports.
| Item | NPC pays you | Why players want it | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Attack on gloves works with any weapon you swap to | check | |
| 1 | No shop in our tables sells a weapon attack scroll | check | |
| 1 | Overalls have 10 slots, and only citizenship quests pay this scroll in our tables | check | |
| 1 | No shop in our tables sells cape stat scrolls | check | |
| 1 | No shop in our tables sells it. Quests at levels 21 and 27 can pay it, so you may have one to sell early | check | |
| 16,500 | No other source in our tables than a rank 10 recipe | check | |
| 1,500 | No shop in our tables sells it, and stars are a thief's main upgrade | check | |
| 9,500 | Level 40 mage staple | check | |
| 250 | A level 29 quest wants it | check |
The pattern is the useful part:
- Scrolls are the money of this game. Every scroll sells to an NPC for 1 meso, so the whole value is on the player market.
- Scarcity beats stats. What sells is what no shop stocks and few quests give.
- Used-up items keep their demand. A scroll is spent once and leaves the market, so the next buyer needs a new one.
- Off-class scrolls still have buyers. Sell those instead of giving them to an NPC. Off-class gear is less sure: most of the gear we checked sold for under twice what an NPC pays.
Early prices are history. Founder's Access had a smaller player pool, and Nexon fixed Bandit's Steal on a miss and double drops from damage-over-time kills on 15 Oct. Do not compare today's price with an October price and call it a trend.
Where mesos go
Short of mesos? Cut potions, stars and arrows first, because they are the only cost you pay every hour. See Potions. Scrolls, crafting, stations and chairs are optional, so compare them with the market first.
| Sink | Cost |
|---|---|
| Potions, stars and arrows | The main running cost for most classes |
| Return Scrolls | 400 for nearest town, 500 for a named town, 600 for Sleepywood |
| Shop scrolls | 20,000 or 40,000 at and |
| Crafting fees | 300 to 16,500 for equipment, 10,000 to 20,000 for scrolls |
| Home stations and chests | 100,000 to 300,000 per recipe, plus materials |
| or | 500,000 at or |
Gear is the big one-off cost. Best next buy ranks the slot that gains you the most per meso at your budget, and buy or scroll says whether a scrolled copy is cheaper to buy or to make. Both price from player stores, so read them as estimates.
Picking your citizenship town
Citizenship opens at level 12 with in Henesys or in Kerning City. Perks are a local specialty shop plus discounts on cabs, storage and some general store items. Nexon lists the local specialty shop as a resident perk, so the town probably decides which scrolls you can buy. If so, that makes it one of the larger early decisions. The full system is in the citizenship guide.
| Shop | Henesys | Kerning City |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll shop | : Overall STR, Overall DEX, Earring Crit. Damage | : Overall INT, Overall LUK, Earring Evasion |
| Both scroll shops | Gloves Attack, Topwear DEF, Bottomwear DEF | The same three |
| General store | : , , | : , , |
Two gates reported from test builds affect this choice. Every Overall scroll reportedly opens at Distinguished Citizen, around level 42. Wolbi stars reportedly need Helpful Stranger, around level 22.
- Mages: default to Kerning City. Mage overalls run from level 15 to 70, so Overall INT has the most items to go on.
- Thieves: default to Kerning City, for Overall LUK and Wolbi stars. The overall case is weaker than it looks. All four thief-only overalls are level 35, so Overall LUK may open some levels after you get one, and the only other overall you can wear is the Sauna Robe below.
- Warriors and bowmen: default to Henesys, but it matters less. Warrior-only overalls stop at level 35 and bowman-only overalls start at 50. Pick the town you will actually use.
Any class can also wear the Sauna Robe, or , a level 30 overall with 10 slots. It is the reward at the end of the nine-step Secret Book chain, from level 32. Step 7 needs a , so plan for it first. See Quests worth doing.
Switching town costs mesos. One report so far puts it at 50,000 and says it applies to the whole account. Treat your first choice as final.
A home comes from or from Visitor grade, one per account. We do not list Contribution thresholds or home prices: Nexon lowered ranks 4 to 10 on 29 Oct, and published numbers predate that.
The rules that matter
A penalty in Classic World also applies to your main MapleStory account, and the other way round.
Real-money trading. The Debt System reclaims mesos from accounts involved in real-money or unfair trades. While in debt you cannot use a Store Permit or Hired Merchant, trade items or Cash items, gift, or drop items. Since 29 Oct you also cannot pick up mesos or items dropped by others. You repay through the Repay Illegal Mesos button, in a town, and all limits lift once it is paid. Appeals go to Player Support.
Nexon says it temporarily banned players who bought or sold mesos or items for real money, and that the Debt System covers those trades and unfair trades, such as trades involving illegitimately obtained mesos or items. Never buy mesos, and be wary of a stranger's trade that looks too generous.
Bots and macros. Nexon says it acts on abnormal gameplay that breaks its Terms of Service, and it improved bot detection on 4 Nov. Read the terms before you use any macro or tool, and see the lie detector guide. Thousands of accounts have reportedly been banned since launch. We found no ruling that any overlay is allowed, so do not assume one is.
