The cheapest damage among mages: Cold Beam for single targets, Thunder Bolt once four mobs are in reach. SP order, when each spell pays, and what to do about the lean 40s and 50s.

Your edge is MP, not burst. Cold Beam is the cheapest maxed attack of the three branches: 7.73 value per MP against Fire Arrow's 6.43 and Holy Arrow's 5.71. Pick Ice/Lightning if you want a lower potion bill and do not mind the weaker wizard spell. Cold Beam reaches 170 against Fire Arrow's 180, and calculator rankings from launch predate Thunder Bolt's raise.
Classic World stops at level 100. As of November 2026 it has no 3rd job, so plan on this job for the long haul. By our estimate you get 1 SP at advancement and 3 a level, not confirmed in Classic World: 121 by 70, 211 by 100. Every 2nd-job tree costs 140, so all of it is maxed at level 77. Whether later SP can go into 1st-job skills is unknown.

Getting the job

Which attack first
- Cold Beam first suits solo play on single mobs, and it is the order below. It gives you the cheap single-target spell the branch is built around.
- Thunder Bolt first suits dense maps. v1.1.0 raised it to 50–80 on 29 Oct, and the swap needs no other change to the table. Your maxed Energy Bolt covers single targets in the meantime.
Thunder Bolt needs 4 mobs in the box to match Cold Beam on MP. On one or two, cast Cold Beam. A separate question is EXP per minute, where fewer targets may be enough, but nobody has measured that since the patch.
SP order
The choice at 41 is the same as for Fire/Poison. If your mobs are spread out, take MP Eater 3 at 41, Meditation 20 by 48, then Thunder Bolt 30 by 58. Meditation is about +12 to 15% on every spell by our estimate, and both orders reach the same spend at 58.
A costs 7,000 NX and resets every skill except Beginner ones. Single reset scrolls sold for mesos between players in the week to 7 Nov, so before you pay NX, ask in chat what one recently sold for. Store listings show only asking prices.
What the spells really do
- Cold Beam slows, it does not freeze. The text says briefly frozen, but the data is a speed effect for 3 seconds. Ice-resist mobs take less and are not slowed. If you remember a hard freeze, that was another version.
- Cold Beam replaces Bolt quickly on cost. At skill level 11 it has Bolt 20's value of 130 for 14 MP against 16. It has low mastery at that point, so by our estimate its average passes Bolt in the mid to high teens.
