The official rules on the Lie Detector Test, the Truth Booth, bans and debt, what to do if you are flagged, and a clear list of what nobody has confirmed.
Every number and name on this page is read live from the game data.
If a lie detector minigame appears, stop and answer it. Failing sends you to the Truth Booth, and being logged out does not appear to help. Almost everything else players argue about here is unconfirmed, and this page marks which is which.
The official rules
As of Nexon's launch notes on 21 October:
The Lie Detector Test is sold at the Citizen General Store. It is account-bound and lasts 7 days.
If you notice a character behaving abnormally, you can use one on them to trigger a minigame.
A character who fails is sent to the Truth Booth.
You must stay logged in for a set duration before you can leave.
In the Truth Booth you cannot move, use skills, chat, use items or join any content.
The client adds three things to the item text: it needs level 10, it works only while the suspect is hunting, and it has a repeat limit on the same player.

By its flags, the third looks like the account-bound, time-limited one Nexon describes. That is our reading. Which version shops sell, and at what citizenship grade, is not in our data.
is a real map, with its own .
If you get tested
Answer the minigame. Treat it as urgent. Nexon has not published its time limit, so assume it is short.
If you pass, carry on.
If you fail, stay logged in. Nexon says you must stay logged in for the duration, which reads as though the clock does not run while you are offline. The duration has not been published.
If you were flagged falsely, note the time and channel, and take a screenshot. Then contact Player Support. We found no published appeal process, but it is the place to start.
Why you might be flagged
Players report griefing with tests, though the details are thin. One report so far says the game itself named macros as the reason, and another came from a player tested three times in four hours on near-empty maps. These are reports, not rules.
Repetitive play draws eyes. Players report basic-attacking warriors being mistaken for bots.
A test needs you to be hunting. A 29 October fix says Mushroom Garden was wrongly marked as a town, which blocked Lie Detector use there. That suggests tests do not work in towns.
Controllers. Nexon officially supports them. A few players suspect controller input draws flags. Nothing confirms it.
Do not use macros or any automation. Nexon's Code of Conduct bans macros, auto-looting and botting, whether or not you are at the keyboard. Nexon's notices say it acts on abnormal play, and its 4 November maintenance notice says it improved bot detection, without details. We found no Nexon list of allowed input tools, so do not assume a key repeater is safe.
Using a test yourself
Use one only on a character that is clearly a bot. It is not a tool for winning a map, and players report griefing as a real problem. Nexon's wording is "abnormal behavior", so someone grinding hard next to you does not count.
A level 10 character can use it, but only citizens can buy it. See citizenship. Because a repeat limit applies, one test per suspect is the sensible use.
Reporting a bot
The game has a Report window: Nexon's 21 October notes mention it. Players use it for bots. The steps, and any daily limit, are not in any notice we read. One report so far puts the limit at about 15 a day.
When bots share your map, one report so far recommends leaving them no half-dead mobs. Do not build a plan on how shared kills split EXP or loot: nobody has confirmed the rule.
Bans
One account, two worlds. A ban in MapleStory is a ban in Classic World, and the reverse, wherever the violation happened.
Nexon says it bans for real money trading. Its 22 October notice says players buying or selling mesos or items for real money were temporarily banned.
Appeals. Nexon names Player Support for debt errors. We found no notice describing a ban appeal. Player Support is still the place to start.
We do not print ban counts. The figures in circulation are secondhand, and they cover different periods.
The Debt System
This penalty can reach ordinary players, because Nexon's notice covers trades involving illegitimately obtained mesos or items as well as real money trading.
While in debt you cannot: use a Store Permit or Hired Merchant, trade in-game or Cash items, gift in the Cash Shop, drop items on the ground, or, since 29 October, pick up mesos or items dropped by other players. Drops from monsters you defeated and certain party quest items are still allowed. You can still drop Kerning PQ coupons and passes.
To clear it: a popup appears at login, and a Repay Illegal Mesos button sits at the top of the screen. You can only pay in a town. The minimum is 1 meso, and you cannot pay more than you hold. Everything lifts once the debt is paid. If you believe it is a mistake, contact Player Support.
Staying safe. Do not buy mesos, and be wary of a deal that looks far too good. How debt is calculated has not been published.
