Mage build variants: how much LUK?
The one stat decision every mage faces. Three LUK plans compared on gear that really exists, what lukless actually costs, and why you can always add LUK but not remove it.
Every number and name on this page is read live from the game data.
Every mage variant comes down to one question: how much LUK do you need? Our suggestion is level minus 10 up to 40 LUK, then stop. That is our own reasoning from client requirements, and no player has tested it.
The rule that outlives any patch: you can always add LUK. You cannot remove it for free. An costs 7,000 NX. By our estimate you get 5 AP a level, not confirmed in Classic World, so 15 LUK takes only 3 levels. Add LUK when the item is in your bag, not before.
Damage figures on this page use community formulas that Nexon has not confirmed.
The LUK rule
Mage armor from level 20 to 70 needs LUK equal to your level minus 10, and only one piece in the data breaks that: 158 of 159. Wands follow the same rule through Cromi. Staves and the top wands do not.
| Level | Armor needs | Best wand or staff | It needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 0 | 0 | |
| 20 | 10 | 10 | |
| 25 | 15 | 15 | |
| 30 | 20 | 20 | |
| 35 | 25 | 25 | |
| 40 | 30 | 30 | |
| 45 | none at this level | 40 | |
| 50 | 40 | 40 | |
| 55 | none at this level | 50 | |
| 60 | 50 | 55 | |
| 65 | none at this level | 60 | |
| 70 | 60 | 65 |
Nearly all armor with no class limit, such as , needs no LUK, and no cape does. is the wand most lists forget: level 35, 62 M.ATK, 25 LUK, Arcforging 7.
Everything in bold is either off the plan or has no confirmed source. Thorns, Evil Tale and Evil Wings appear only as reference drops that no player has confirmed, and Angel Wings has no known source. Arc Staff needs 5 LUK above the plan for +4 M.ATK over five levels, so skip it.
Three plans
| Plan | Choose it if | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Level minus 10, hold at 40 after 50 (our suggestion) | You want the best damage on gear that exists today | You must add LUK later if a Thorns or better turns up |
| 3 INT 2 LUK, then 4 and 1 to 63 LUK | You already hold, or plan to buy, level 55+ wands | 10 INT behind in the 40s, 10 to 20 behind in the 50s |
| Lukless | You want to skip LUK and accept a weak 15 to 40 | 34 M.ATK until a level 40 sword you may not find, and most armor is locked |
INT and base LUK at each level, at 5 AP a level. This assumes all Beginner AP went to INT and LUK starts at 5, which is not confirmed:
| Plan | 40 | 50 | 60 | 70 | 100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 and 2, then 4 and 1 to 63 LUK, then all INT | 172 / 40 | 212 / 50 | 252 / 60 | 299 / 63 | 449 / 63 |
| Level minus 10 | 182 / 30 | 222 / 40 | 262 / 50 | 302 / 60 | not needed |
| Level minus 10, hold at 40 | 182 / 30 | 222 / 40 | 272 / 40 | 322 / 40 | 472 / 40 |
| Lukless | 207 / 5 | 257 / 5 | 307 / 5 | 357 / 5 | 507 / 5 |
The direction does not depend on any formula: same wand, more INT. By our estimate level minus 10 runs about 4 to 6% ahead of the 3 and 2 plan through the 40s, and hold-at-40 about 10% ahead at 60 with both on Cromi. If the 3 and 2 player really does own a level 55+ wand, that shrinks to a few percent, and Angel Wings would tip it the other way.
The 3 and 2 plan reaches 63 LUK at 70, so it falls 2 short of Angel Wings unless gear stats count toward requirements, which is not confirmed.
Catch-up is cheap. If a lands in your bag at 55 on the hold plan, you are 10 LUK short, which is two levels of AP. may cover 5 of that if gear stats count toward requirements, which is not confirmed.
Lukless
On the same assumptions, LUK stays at 5 and everything goes into INT: 157 at 30, 257 at 50, 357 at 70, 507 at 100.
Weapons. , and need no LUK, so you sit at 34 M.ATK from 15 to 40. Then there is : level 40, 52 M.ATK, no LUK, a one-handed sword with 7 slots. Its only listed source is one unconfirmed row, its price is unknown, and wand scrolls do not apply to it as far as the scroll text shows.
Armor. You are locked out of at 15 LUK, and every mage glove from level 20 up. With confirmed sources, lukless reaches +7 INT at 50 against +14 for the standard route: , and . A would add +2 to either. Stores list the cape. Its chain wants 20 , and we can show no source for it, so do not stack for that route until you know where it comes from. Even counting pieces with no known source, a no-LUK set tops out at +14 with , leaving aside the +999 GM hats.
Damage. By our estimate lukless runs about 8 to 10% behind at 30 to 35 if the other mage holds the crafted wands, then ties hold-at-40 from about 40 onward, assuming you find the umbrella. So its one real advantage is simplicity. It is not clearly a budget build either: neither side has a proven cheap wand ladder, since all wands above 25 are crafted or bought from players.
If you take it, take it knowing the sword may not arrive. at 40 is a real gap.
Other forks
The other mage fork is Bolt against Claw, not a stat build. It is covered in Magician build. We found no other named mage stat builds in Classic World.
Can mages miss?
This is not settled. Some reads of the client say spells use the same hit check as physical attacks, others say every spell lands. Nexon has not said, and we found no test either way and no player report of a spell missing. Treat missing as possible against mobs above your level. Either way, DEX does nothing for a mage. See Accuracy explained.
Not confirmed yet
- Whether gear LUK counts toward equip requirements. Until that is tested, plan on base LUK.
- Whether any level 55+ wand can be found in the game today.
- Where to get reliably, and what it costs.
- Whether anyone has played level minus 10 to 50. This plan is reasoning, not a result.
- AP per level, how Beginner AP is assigned, and starting LUK.
