Shade
The undead boss behind Niora Hospital: 47,000 HP, weak to holy, and the kill for An Old Grudge, one of the two best-paying boss quests.
Every number and name on this page is read live from the game data.
Shade pays most through its quest, level with Mushmom's . gives 11,400 EXP, 23 times the 488 the kill pays on its own, and it sits in a chain worth 50,160 EXP. Take the quest first: without it the kill pays only 488 EXP. We have no durations for its debuffs, and Seal is read as blocking skills, so casters should expect gaps in their damage.
Base timer one hour, more random since 21 Oct, so plan on at least that and do not set an exact alarm. If the boss is missing, try another channel, and log the kill on the boss timers page. Rules are in the boss overview.
Check the gate first
The chain is A Grudge That Won't Rest, Lv. 47, in the citizenship story. The client requires first. Reference data puts the chain at Kerning citizenship grade 8, not confirmed. Ranks 4 to 10 cost less contribution since the 29 Oct patch. See citizenship.
| Quest | What you do | Pays |
|---|---|---|
| Kill 50 for | 11,400 EXP, 1,477 mesos, 20 | |
| Talk to | 7,980 EXP, 1,033 mesos | |
| Talk to | 7,980 EXP, 1,033 mesos | |
| Kill Shade, report to Roxy | 11,400 EXP, 1,477 mesos, 10 | |
| Back to Chun Ji | 11,400 EXP, 1,477 mesos, a random scroll |
The last scroll is a random roll, equal weight in the client, between (60%, +2) and (10%, +3).
That is 50,160 EXP and 6,497 mesos. Wraiths are also on Jane's list at Lv. 44, so if you are running her chain too, hold both quests while you hunt them. Whether one kill counts for both has not been tested.
Getting there
Four portals, and the first two are hidden. Older three-step routes are stale: was added at launch.
- : the doors into are hidden portals, on the west side of town.
- Niora Hospital: the quest log calls it a hidden passage on the first floor. It leads to .
- Murky Swamp I: walk to the far west exit.
- Murky Swamp II: the portal toward the west end leads to .
An empty cabin means change channel. Shade is the only thing in there.
What it does
The client gives Shade four skills, read as Seal, Darkness, Curse and a summon. The timings below are from the game files, not tested in Classic World. What each debuff does to you is our reading, not a measurement.
- Seal should block your skills, for 3 seconds, at most every 2 minutes.
- Darkness should lower your accuracy, for 6 seconds, at most once a minute. The size is unknown.
- Curse lasts 2 minutes and can come every 35 seconds. It has no established effect. Do not plan around anything you read about it.
- Summons. Below 50% HP it can call 3 every 30 seconds, up to 3 at once. They are level 48, so a party should decide who takes them.
- Touch, 620 before defence. No attack is listed beyond contact. Keep HP above 1,000, which is our margin, not a measurement.
- Regen, 470 HP per tick. Tick length is unknown.
No cure item or cure skill exists in the client. is MP only. Ride debuffs out rather than saving anything for them.
What to use
Magic is the right damage type: M.DEF 10 against W.DEF 30. Physical classes face the highest W.DEF of any live boss, 30, and need about 114 accuracy by our estimate.
| You are | Use | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Cleric | , | Weak to holy, and undead so Heal damages it. How much is unknown |
| Fire/Poison | Neutral. is resisted, so the 29 Oct Poison Breath buff does not help here | |
| Ice/Lightning | Neutral, and M.DEF 10 still helps |
The Cleric's case. At rank 30, Heal reaches 300 either side of you and 90 up and down (250 either side at rank 1), and hits up to 6 targets. Shade only touches. In theory a Cleric can work from outside its reach. That is reasoning: nobody has reported it.
Physical classes: that 114 applies from Lv. 48 up, and a higher level adds nothing. Check your hit rate and damage in the fight checker, and see the boss overview for how the estimate works.
Drops
We hold no drop rows for Shade, and no drop is confirmed. The 10 Elixirs above are a quest reward. If you kill it, tell us what fell through the drop report. The first few reports will fill the table.
Next: finish for the scroll.
Not confirmed yet
- What Seal, Darkness and Curse really do.
- Whether the summons match the game files in Classic World: what it calls, how often, and the HP at which it starts.
- The citizenship grade this chain really needs.
